A Focus Review in Polymer Journal with M. Tanaka and S. Morita. We discuss the free, intermediate and nonfreezing states of water at polymer interfaces and their roles in protein and cell interactions, including time-resolved ATR-IR studies of water sorption analyzed with machine learning, and present the water barrier model as a framework for designing biocompatible polymers.
